(1922.1.17- ), Vice Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, People's Republic of China (1979.11 – 1982.4) Born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, Pu Shouchang graduated from Michigan University of the US in June 1942 and obtained a Ph.D. degree from the Research Institute of Howard University in 1946. In 1944, he joined the Communist Party. After his study in the US was over, he stayed in the US and took charge of the work on Chinese students in the US. At a time, he served as special correspondent of Wen Hui Bao in the US. He made lecturing tours in the US as a lecturer of the East West Culture Association of Pearl Buck. At the same time, he was interpreter to General Feng Yuxiang, assisting him in unfolding activities in the U. S. opposing the Chinese civil war, dictatorship, and Chiang Kai-shek. From November 1949, when he returned to China, to 1962, he served as key interpreter to the governmental and Party leaders in their foreign activities. From 1950 to 1954, he was secretary of Policy Committee of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He attended Kaesong Negotiations in Korea from 1952 to 1953. From 1954 to 1965, he served as secretary to Premier Zhou Enlai and followed him in his visit to ten African countries. From 1965 to 1973, he was Deputy Director General of Policy Research Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1974 to 1979, he served as Director General of Foreign Affairs Bureau of State Planning Commission. From May 1982, he was transferred to Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as consultant. He is now member of Science Academy of the Morocco Kingdom. He attended a series of important international meetings, including the first Geneva Conference in 1954, Bandung Conference in 1955, the Moscow Conferences of the Communist Parties of various countries in 1957 and 1960, the second Geneva Conference, and the Cancun conference of heads of states in 1981, and the consulting conference of the developing countries held in New Delhi in 1982. He took part in the work of translating the "Selected Works of Mao Zedong" Vol. 1 to Vol. 5 into English and the work of finalizing important documents of the Party and the state.
