On Aug. 16, 2013, President Xi Jinping met with the delegates attending the Ministerial Forum of China-Africa Health Development at the Great Hall of the People.
Xi Jinping said, China and Africa enjoy a sustainable friendship for a long time. It has gone through the tests of dramatic changes in international situation and we have got rewarded with sincerity and trust, which are more precious than gold. China-Africa relations have entered into fast lane for development since the founding of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. The two sides have further enhanced mutual political trust, achieved more fruits out of practical cooperation, coordinated more closely with each other in international affairs, and further enriched China-Africa strategic partnership. China and Africa are with the common destiny, share similar historical experiences, and work on similar development tasks and for the same bright future. China is ready to work with African countries and people to seize the rare historical opportunity, adhere to equality, mutual benefits, and win-win cooperation to better safeguard the common interests of people in China, Africa and the rest of the world.
Xi Jinping said that China-Africa health cooperation is an important part of China-Africa cooperation. For almost half a century, China has sent out medical teams of 18,000 staff as total to Africa and relieved 250 million people from pain of disease. It has helped promote the health development in Africa and contributed to China-Africa friendship. China is willing to continue to promote China-Africa health cooperation, to carry out health projects such as sending medical teams and going "tour for the light", which doing cataract surgeries, to deepen cooperation in the fields of maternal and child health care and medical personnel training. Human development is at the core of development. Hope this forum will substantially push forward health cooperation between China and Africa within the framework of China-Africa Forum and contribute to the health of the peoples in China and Africa.
Xi Jinping thanked the relevant international organizations for their support for the health development of China and Africa, and their contribution to the health equality all over the world. He said that China will continue to support international organizations for their jobs, to actively engage in international health governance and coordination, and to help African countries realize the UN Millennium Development Goals as early as possible.
Vice President Fouad Mohadji of Comoros, on behalf of the African member states of the Forum, thanked the Chinese government for its long-term support for the health improvement and poverty reduction in Africa. He said that the Forum helps strengthen mutually beneficial and win-win cooperative partnership between Africa and China. The African countries are willing to further expand Africa-China cooperation in heath and other fields.
This Forum is to carry out the important measures of the "Beijing Action Plan", which passed at the Fifth Ministerial Conference of China-Africa Forum in 2012, with the theme of "priorities of China-Africa health cooperation in the new era".
Representatives from 48 African countries, including Vice President Fouad Mohadji of Comoros andAssistant Prime Minister Maria Cristina Lima of Cape Verde, as well as officials from international organizations, such as Director-General of World Health Organization Margaret Chan, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe, and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and UN Population Fund Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin, were all at the meeting.
Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong was present.
