On November 18, 2013 (local time), Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong met in Chicago with Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago.
Liu Yandong said that the heads of state of the two countries reached important consensus on jointly building a new model of major-country relations between China and the United States and the two countries need to explore a new path for peaceful coexistence, positive interaction and effective cooperation. Since the beginning of the year, the two sides have been actively executing the consensus reached by the heads of state and the dialogue and cooperation on all fronts are seeing positive progress. The main purpose of Liu Yandong's visit is to co-chair the 4th round of China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange with US Secretary of State John Kerry, discuss ways on how to further enhance exchange and cooperation in education, science & technology, culture, sports and other areas, bring China-US people-to-people exchanges to higher levels and build up a broader and more solid public-opinion and social foundation for the development of the new model of major-country relations.
Liu Yandong said that Chicago is a major city in the Midwest and is always at the forefront of cooperation with China among the cities in the United States. Last week, the Communist Party of China held the 3rd plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee, which made overall arrangements for deepening reform and put forward the timetable and roadmap for reform. Liu Yandong expressed the hope that the communities in the City of Chicago could seize the opportunity to work with China to explore new growth areas of cooperation.
Rahm Emanuel said that Chicago has not only strong desires but also unique advantages and conditions to strengthen cooperation with China. Chicago is willing to work with China to further develop exchange and cooperation in education, culture, science & technology, sports and other fields and play a leading role in boosting the development of China-US relations.
Liu Yandong also sent her condolence to the victims suffering the recent tornado in the State of Illinois.
