On Dec. 8, 2013 (local time), Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met with visiting Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi in Tehran, capital of Iran.
President Hassan Rouhani said that China is a great country. Iran is willing to develop solid relations with China. In September, President Hassan Rouhani had a successful meeting with President Xi Jinping during the Bishkek Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the two leaders reached important consensus on advancing the bilateral relationship. Iran is willing to strengthen bilateral exchange and cooperation with China in all fields and enhance communication and cooperation with China on major regional issues.
Yang Jiechi said that Iran is a regional power with important influence and an ancient civilization. Developing the relations of friendly cooperation is in line with the common interests of both countries and is conductive to the peace and development of the Middle East. China attaches long-term importance to relations with Iran and wish to work together with Iran to promote bilateral relations through deepening exchange and cooperation in line with the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries.
Rouhani introduced the position of Iran on its nuclear program. He reaffirmed that Iran's nuclear program is peaceful and Iran is committed to solving the nuclear issue through talks. Iran is ready to dissolve the world's concerns on its nuclear program under the framework and principles of international relations. Not long ago, Iran reached a preliminary agreement with the six countries, which is an important step. Iran wishes to join hands with other countries to facilitate the implementation of the agreement and launch the next stage of talks as soon as possible. Iran appreciates China's just position and endeavor to facilitate the talks and maintain peace and expects China to keep playing important roles.
Yang Jiechi said that China supports Iran's rights to the peaceful use of nuclear power, and that the rightful demands and reasonable concerns of Iran should be taken into consideration. He called on all sides to seek peaceful solution to the nuclear issue via dialogues and negotiations in the principles of mutual respect, a step-by-step approach and reciprocity. China also supports Iran's efforts to improve relations with the international community by showing more openness. The framework agreement reached between Iran and the six countries is an important step toward a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue. For the next phase, all sides should work to facilitate the implementation of the agreement and keep the momentum of the talks. Yang called on Iran to seize the opportunity and continue to participate in the talks with flexibility and pragmatism so as to seek a solution most acceptable to all. China will stay committed to promoting peace talks and playing a constructive role in the pursuit of a comprehensive final solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
The two sides also exchanged views on Afghan and Syrian issues.
On the same day, Yang Jiechi also met respectively with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif, and Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani and exchanged views with them on bilateral relations, the Iranian nuclear issue and other regional issues. The two sides agreed to enhance communication and coordination and work together for the peace and stability in concerned countries and the region as a whole.
