Chinese Ambassador to Spain Meets with Representatives of Chinese Businessmen in Elche

In late night September 21, 2004, Chinese ambassador to Spain Qiu Xiaoqi met specially with 4 representatives of Chinese businessmen from Elche, including Chen Jiusong, a direct victim of the recent warehouse fire violence suffered by Chinese businessmen in Elche.

Qiu Xiaoqi carefully listened to what was reported by the representatives. He expressed condolences to Chen Jiusong personally and asked the four representatives to convey his sincere solicitude to all the Chinese businessmen in Elche. He said emotionally, "the difficulties of fellow Chinese living abroad are just our difficulties. We feel deeply grieved over the losses suffered by our fellow Chinese."

Qiu Xiaoqi said that the Chinese embassy is deeply concerned with the violence, forming an emergency group immediately after the incident happened. The heads of the Consular Department and the Economic and Commercial Counselor's Office hurried to the violence spots, investigated the incident and made representations with the Spanish side. The Chinese embassy will ask for an emergency meeting with the Director General of the Department of Consular Affairs of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chief of the Police Administration of Ministry of Internal affairs of Spain, to make representations again and demand the Spanish side to take all necessary measures to protect the personal and property security of Chinese businessmen and urge Spain to conduct in-depth investigations and bring those responsible for the incident to justice. Chinese counselor Yan Banghua who is in charge of consular affairs and Director Lin Ji of the Department of Consular Affairs of the embassy will leave for Elche on September 22 to negotiate with the local government and police authorities concerning the incident and condole with local Chinese.

Qiu Xiaoqi also expressed the hope that the Chinese businessmen in Elche should strengthen self-protection awareness, exercise restraint, handle the event in a calm and rational way, try to bring the event to an end as soon as possible and restore normal operational and living order.
