On December 31, 2004, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Lu Shumin attended the donation ceremony held in the Coordinating Ministry for People's Welfare of Indonesia, on which Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) donated fund to Indonesian Red Cross Society (IRCS) for the relief of tsunami disaster. On behalf of RCSC, Lu delivered the donation of US$ 100,000 to IRCS. Alwi Shihab, the Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare of Indonesia received the donation on behalf of IRCS.

On the ceremony, Ambassador Lu conveyed the condolence of the Chinese government and people to the people in the disaster-hit areas in Indonesia and noted that the Chinese government and people are deeply concerned over the disaster in Indonesia and willing to provide all necessary assistance in their capacity. He believed that with the joint efforts of all social communities in Indonesia and with the assistance of the international community, the Indonesian government and people will surely defeat the disaster, overcome difficulties and restore the normal production and living order in the disaster areas.

Shihab expressed sincere thanks for the relief assistance to the Chinese government and RCSC on behalf of the Indonesian government and IRCS. Shihab said that a friend in need is a friend indeed. The Chinese government and people provided assistance immediately after the tsunami took place and dispatched rescue teams to the disaster-stricken areas in a timely manner, fully demonstrating that China is a real friend of the Indonesian people to share happiness and pains. The Indonesian people will remember the generous help and friendliness of the Chinese people forever. It is their sincere hope that China-Indonesia relations will be improved constantly to benefit the people of both countries.
