Summary Report on the Tsunami Disaster in India as of January 11

According to the Indian official statistics, as of 10:00 am, January 10, 2005, the death toll from the tsunami disaster in India has reached 10,136 with 5,617 missing, including 5,540 missing on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands most of whom might have died. Since the outbreak of the tsunami, the Islands have suffered 124 aftershocks, including one registering 6.2 on the Richter scale on January 10. The Indian government announced that it would submit the proposal of establishing the National Disaster Administration and the draft of the Central Disaster Management Regulations to the budget conference of the Parliament. The Ministry of Science and Technology will set up a tsunami warning center and a panel of technological experts will conduct the geological and oceanographic research on the Nicobar Islands. The states hit by the disaster have all agreed that they will launch the second phase of reconstruction efforts as soon as possible so as to help local people resume normal life at the earliest date. In the Andhra Pradesh state all the refugees have returned home and the fishermen of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Keeraka states have restarted fishing. Up to now, no epidemic has ever broken out in the disaster-struck areas of India. The 148 medical agencies on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands have offered medical treatment to more than 13,000 victims. The Indian government has also provided drugs worth 10 million Rupees (about US$220,000) to the Islands.
