President and Prime Minister of Madagascar Met Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Respectively

2005/01/11

On January 1, 2005, President Marc Ravalomanana and Prime Minister Jacques Sylla of Madagascar met visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing at their offices respectively, expressing thanks to China for its long-term assistance and indicating adherence to the one-China policy.

During the meeting, President Ravalomanana said that he was pleased to see the smooth running of the cooperation projects established during his visit to China. Madagascar has abundant resources and the Chinese people are practical and hardworking. Therefore there are a lot of areas that boast potentials for cooperation between the countries and the prospects are broad.

Li Zhaoxing said that during his visit to China last year, President Ravalomanana exchanged views in depth with President Hu Jintao on the creation of a new situation for China-Madagascar relations, which brought the friendly relations between the two countries to a new high. China cherishes the traditional friendship with Madagascar and will earnestly implement the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries to promote in a down-to-earth manner their new partnership featured by long-term stability, mutual trust and mutual benefit. In particular, China will ensure the smooth operation of such projects as construction of the International Convention Center, explorations of mineral resources and construction of cement factories.

Sylla said during his meeting with Li Zhaoxing that men, if accompanied by others, could go farther and more quickly than alone. Likewise, the firm support rendered by China greatly has inspired Madagascar, which is very young. Madagascar is proud of having a friend like China. Madagascar follows the one-China policy, supports China's lofty cause of national reunification, and understands and supports China's positions on such issues as human rights.

Li Zhaoxing expressed appreciation for the remarks of Sylla and emphasized that support and assistance are mutual. China stands ready to enhance cooperation with Madagascar in all areas so as to bring more tangible benefits to the development of the two countries and the welfare of the two peoples.
