Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Meets with Grenadian Foreign Minister

2005/01/20

On January 20, 2005, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with visiting Grenadian Foreign Minister Elvin Nimrod in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. Both sides, on behalf of the Chinese and Grenadian governments respectively, signed the joint Communiqué on the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries and decided to resume diplomatic relations on January 20, 2005.

Li complimented the decision of the Grenadian government to resume diplomatic ties with China, saying that the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries marks a brand new phase of bilateral relations and paves the way for the comprehensive cooperation between the two countries. The normalization of relations between China and Grenada is in the basic and long-term interest of the two peoples and once again shows to the world that the one-China principle is widely recognized by the international community and any separatist act aimed at "Taiwan independence" is doomed to failure. The Chinese government stands ready to conduct cooperation with Grenada in such areas as politics, economy, trade, culture and education on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence. He expressed hope that both sides strengthen personnel exchanges, enhance mutual understanding and political mutual trust and send ambassadors and open embassy to each other as soon as possible.

Nimrod said that the resumption of diplomatic ties between Grenada and China is of great historic significance. The Grenadian government recognizes that there is only one China in the world, the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the entire China and Taiwan is an integral part of the Chinese territory. Grenada is willing to develop long-term friendly relations of cooperation with China.

Following the meeting, the foreign ministers of the two countries jointly met journalists.
