Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Talks over Phone with African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Konare and Nigerian Foreign Minister Adeniji Respectively

2005/06/06

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing recently held telephone conversations with African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare and Nigerian Foreign Minister Oluyemi Adeniji respectively on the reform of the United Nations. Li said the reform of the UN Security Council concerns the common interests of all UN member states and bears on the practical interests of all parties involved. The reform should give full play to democracy and broad consensus should be reached on the basis of thorough consultations. Under the circumstance that the UN member states have yet not reached consensus on the reform scheme, Germany, Japan, Brazil and India, known as G-4, hastily proposed a draft resolution on UN Security Council expansion and forcefully pushed to vote on it. Such a move is not conducive to the solidarity of UN members, runs counter to the original intention of the UN reform and undermines the interests of developing countries. Konare said China is a friend of Africa and China's stance is very important to African countries. Africa will not sacrifice its solidarity for the UN Security Council reform. Adeniji expressed understanding for China's concerns and willing to keep close contacts with China on the issue.
