Spokesperson on the so-called "Human Rights Report" carried by the American magazine "Human Rights Watch"

2000/12/12

Q: Human Rights Watch based in US has recently issued the so-called "Human Rights Report", some contents of which are related to China. What is your comment on this?

A: Human Rights Watch based in US has recently issued the so-called "Human Rights Report". In those parts related to China it has deliberately slandered and maliciously attacked the human rights situation in China by means of fabrication and distortion of the facts, to which we express our strong indignation.

The Chinese Government has always attached importance to promoting and protecting the human rights and fundamental freedom of the Chinese people. It has made unremitting efforts toward this end and has scored remarkable achievements. At present the human rights situation in China is at the best of times in history, a fact universally acknowledged by the international community. Human Rights Watch, regardless of the facts, has wantonly distorted the human rights situation in China in its report. Its real intention is to interfere in the internal affairs of China and defame China under the pretext of the so-called human rights question. Their attempt has gone against the fundamental interests of the two countries and the two peoples and is doomed to failure.
