Wen Jiabao Meets with Pakistani President Musharraf

On February 21, 2006, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf at Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai. Wen said that both sides share all-weather friendship and have conducted all-round cooperation. China will continue to consolidate and deepen bilateral strategic cooperative partnership in the spirit of being conducive to safeguarding regional peace and stability based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. When pointed out that both countries border on each other and have comparatively large market capacity, which is a favorable condition for them to further expand mutually beneficial cooperation. The government departments of both countries should strengthen macroscopic planning and guidance, adjust trade mix and complement each other's advantages. The businesses of the two countries should also actively forge ahead and strengthen cooperation of mutual benefits in a way that more conforms to the rule of market economy. Both sides should also explore new cooperative approaches and steadily enhance the level of economic and trade cooperation. Wen emphasized that the Chinese government encourages Chinese businesses to invest in Pakistan and participate in economic development there. It is hoped that Pakistan will take strong measures to ensure the safety of life and property of Chinese personnel. Musharraf said that the two countries share a profound friendship and have conducted close cooperation. Both sides support and cooperate with each other on many major issues. After Pakistan was hit by the earthquake disaster last year, China offered disaster relief and reconstruction assistance to Pakistan in time, which fully shows the friendly feelings held by Chinese people towards Pakistani people. Pakistan would like to make joint efforts with China and take advancing negotiations on bilateral free trade zone as an opportunity to elevate the level of bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Pakistan would also like to enable the friendship between both sides to pass on from generation to generation through expanded exchanges and cooperation in health, education and other areas. Musharraf reaffirmed that Pakistan welcomes Chinese businesses to invest there and will take earnest measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens in Pakistan.
