Chinese Government Takes Back Overseas Chinese in Solomon Islands by Chartered Plane

The Chinese government attaches great importance to protecting the legitimate rights and interest of overseas Chinese citizens and legal person including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots. Learning that overseas Chinese suffered from the riot on the Solomon Islands, Party and government leaders including President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao instructed the Foreign Ministry to watch the situation closely and take tangible measures to ensure the safety of overseas Chinese in the Solomon Islands and asked related departments to express their sincere condolence to the overseas Chinese. The Chinese Foreign Ministry and embassies and consulates activated the emergency mechanism in a timely manner and are working with related departments and local governments to provide as much assistance to the overseas Chinese in the Solomon Islands as possible. In view of the current situation of the Solomon Islands, in order to secure the safety of overseas Chinese, the Chinese government has adopted urgent measures. Recently, the Chinese embassy in Papua New Guinea evacuated the overseas Chinese in the Solomon Islands to Papua New Guinea by a chartered commercial flight. Today, the Chinese government sent a chartered plane of China Southern Airlines from Guangzhou to Papua New Guinea to take back the overseas Chinese to China. Guangdong pays great attention to making preparations for receiving the overseas Chinese. A workgroup composed of staffs of the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Public Security, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council has arrived at Guangzhou to provide assistance.
