China and the United Nations Cosponsored Review Session on Indian Ocean Tsunami Emergency Relief

On October 23, 2006, the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the UN Resident Coordinator's Office cosponsored the Review Session on Indian Ocean Tsunami Emergency Relief in Beijing. Present at the meeting were officials from Chinese agencies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Civil Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Health, State Environmental Protection Administration and China Seismological Bureau, as well as those from the offices of related UN organizations in China including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), World Food Program, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and World Health Organization (WHO). The session reviewed the usage of China's relief funds for the Indian Ocean Tsunami through the UN, summarized experience and discussed how to strengthen China-UN cooperation in humanitarian aid and other areas. Assistant Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai attended and addressed the meeting. In his speech, he elaborated China's views on international humanitarian cooperation and briefed on China's efforts in disaster reduction and relief, as well as the country's participation in international humanitarian cooperation, stressing that China is ready to work with the international community to continue supporting global efforts in disaster relief and reduction within its available resources.
