On December 11, 2006, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and visiting Canadian Deputy Foreign Minister Peter Harder held the 13th political and security consultation between the officials of the Foreign Ministries of China and Canada in Beijing.

Both sides exchanged in-depth views in a candid manner on the development of bilateral ties in the past year and the priority tasks for the next stage, agreeing that the two countries should firmly grasp their common interests, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and properly handle differences so as to push for sound and steady development of the ties. They also discussed the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, the Iranian nuclear issue, the reform of the UN, counter-terrorism and other international and regional issues of common concern.
