Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Holds Talks with His Jordanian Counterpart

2006/12/20

On December 19, 2006, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdul-Ilah al-Khatib, who was here in China for a working visit. Both sides made positive comments on bilateral ties, expressing willingness to further the friendly cooperation between the two countries and signed a memorandum of understanding on setting up a bilateral strategic dialogue group.

On the situation in the Middle East, Li said while the existing disputes have remained unresolved for a long time, new problems are also emerging, expressing China's concern over the growing complication of issues in the Middle East. Li said the only way to resolve these issues should be on the basis of the relevant United Nation's resolutions and the principle of "land for peace" and through negotiations, so as to realize peaceful coexistence among all countries in the region. China hopes that all parties concerned will suppress interference to resume negotiations as soon as possible and realize peace and stability in the Middle East at an early date.

Al-Khatib appreciated China's just stance on the Middle East issues, and said Jordan was willing to strengthen consultation and cooperation with China.
