On December 11, 2007, Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also special envoy of the Chinese government, held talks with Pakistani Foreign Minister Inamul Haq, exchanging in-depth views on bilateral ties and other issues of mutual concern. During the meeting, Wang said China highly appreciates the unremitting efforts made by President Musharraf and the Pakistani government to safeguard stability, develop economy, promote democracy and combat religious extremism and terrorist forces. The policy currently adopted by Pakistan conforms to the fundamental interests of Pakistan and its people and is also conducive to peace and stability of this region, he said. Wang said bilateral friendship has a firm basis and the strategic cooperative partnership established between the two countries is widely supported by all political parties and social sectors in Pakistan. He believed that whatever changes take place in Pakistan's domestic situation, the all-round friendly cooperation between the two countries will continue to deepen. Agreeing with Wang, Haq said Pakistan welcomes the visit made by the Chinese special envoy, stressing that Pakistan attaches great importance to ties with China and holds that bilateral friendship is the consensus reached by the Pakistani government and all political parties. Haq thanked Chinese companies and personnel for actively participating in Pakistan's social and economic construction. The Pakistani government will continue to take effective measures and do its utmost to ensure life safety and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens in Pakistan, he pledged. Haq reaffirmed that the Pakistani government firmly adheres to the one-China policy and opposes "Taiwan independence" and the Taiwan separatist activities seeking a referendum on UN membership. On the same day, Wang Yi also met with Pakistan's Interim Minister Hamid Nawaz Khan and Foreign Secretary Riaz Mohammad Khan. Wang Yi arrived in Islamabad on December 11, kicking off his three-day visit to Pakistan.
