Wen Jiabao Meets with Peruvian President Garcia

2008/03/20

On March 20, 2008, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Peruvian President Alan Garcia in Ziguangge, Zhongnanhai.

Wen said China and Peru have witnessed smooth development of their relations and have become all-round cooperative partners since the establishment of diplomatic ties 37 years ago. China attaches importance to developing ties with Peru from a strategic perspective and is ready to work with Peru to push bilateral ties to a higher level.

Wen told Garcia that Peru was an important trading partner and major investment destination of China in Latin America. China appreciated Peru's recognition of China's full market economy status, Wen said, expressing the hope that the two nations would actively push forward the China-Peru FTA talks and strive to reach consensus at an early date for the benefit of both peoples. China encouraged and supported domestic companies to invest in Peru and welcomed Peruvian businesspeople to develop the Chinese market, the premier said. He noted that the two sides should conduct various forms of economic and technological cooperation in such areas as infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, forestry and fishery.

Garcia said the ever deepening Peru-China relations are mutually beneficial. He hoped that both sides can continue to enhance political trust, expand personnel exchanges, enlarge cooperation area and push forward cooperation on economy, trade, investment, culture and tourism, so as to upgrade bilateral relations substantially.

Garcia said China's achievements in economic and cultural development are of positive significance to the world. China has always adhered to the principle of equality and mutual benefit while handling foreign relations and has never imposed its ideology and development mode upon others, thus setting a good example to all countries of the world.

Peru resolutely opposed Taiwan's proposed "referendum on UN membership", Garcia said, noting that Peru was aware of what was behind the recent violence in Lhasa. Garcia reiterated that Peru would stand by the Chinese people forever and firmly support China's just cause of safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
