Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Holds Phone Talks with His Canadian Counterpart Bernier

On the evening of April 7, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held phone talks with his Canadian counterpart Maxime Bernier, exchanging views on bilateral ties and issues of common concern. Bernier said Canada attaches importance to developing ties with China and supports Beijing to host the 2008 Olympic Games, saying his country will send an official team to attend the opening ceremony. He told Yang that Canada adheres to the one-China policy and holds that Tibet is an inalienable part of China. Yang expressed China's willingness to work with Canada in improving and developing bilateral ties. He also elaborated on China's principled position on the Tibet question. Yang stressed that the Olympic Games belongs to the whole world, adding that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be a success with support from the governments and peoples of all countries in the world.
