On April 14, 2008, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with visiting Minister of State in the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office Lord Malloch-Brown, who was accompanying British Chancellor of the Exchequer & British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's special representative Alistair Darling for the First China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue in China.

Wang said China and the UK, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, hold great influence in the world. He suggested that both sides should strengthen consultations and cooperation and push for sound, stable development of China-UK comprehensive strategic partnership. Wang also introduced the achievements the Tibet Autonomous Region has scored in development and construction and elaborated on the Chinese government's principled position on the Tibet-related issues. Lord Malloch-Brown reaffirmed that the Tibet question is an internal affair of China. He spoke highly of China's enormous achievements in reform and opening up and emphasized that the UK attaches great importance to developing ties with China. He hoped that both sides can further deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. The two also exchanged views on the Myanmar issue.
