UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Voices Full Support for Beijing Olympic Games

On April 17, 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Special Representative of President Hu Jintao, who is attending the high-level open debate of the UN Security Council, at the UN headquarters in New York. Ban said he himself and the UN will do the utmost to support the Beijing Olympic Games and oppose connecting the games with politics. He expressed belief that with the support of the Chinese government and people, the Beijing Olympic Games will be a success and will surely become a platform to promote world peace, harmony and cooperation, and to build mutual understanding among people around the world.
Wang said the Beijing Olympic Games is not only an aspiration of Chinese people, but also of people all over the world. Any attempts to disturb the international sports event are going against the will of the people, he said, adding that the Beijing Olympic Games will be successful. Both sides also exchanged views on issues including China's cooperation with the UN, Sudan's Darfur, Myanmar and the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
