The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Notifies Myanmar of Increasing Assistance to Myanmar

2008/05/08

China maintained close contact with Myanmar on assistance with Myanmar's disaster relief after an unprecedented cyclone hit Myanmar on May 2, 2008.

On May 8, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Myanmar ambassador to China U Thein Lwin. Wang said that China and Myanmar are good neighbors. When one place suffers misfortune, aid comes from all sides. This is a traditional virtue of the Chinese people. The Chinese people and leaders are deeply concerned over the situation in Myanmar after the country was hit by the cyclone and have been paying close attention to the disaster relief in Myanmar. To help the Myanmar people with their relief and reconstruction efforts, the Chinese government decided to offer Myanmar an additional 30 million Yuan in emergency aid after having provided $1 million emergency aid to help the Myanmar people overcome the disaster and rebuild their homes.

U Thein Lwin expressed his sincere gratitude to the Chinese government for offering aid again to Myanmar on behalf of the Myanmar government. He said that he had felt the friendly feelings of the Chinese people all the time since Myanmar was hit by the cyclone. In recent days, many Chinese organizations and individuals, even youth students came to our embassy to make donations. This is a solid proof of the profound feelings held by the Chinese people to the Myanmar people. He added that the people of Myanmar would overcome the disaster at an early date with the help of China and other friendly countries.
