International Community Offers More Condolences, Aid for China Earthquake (XXIV)

More countries and international organizations have, by various means, offered their condolences and aid in the wake of the deadly earthquake in southwestern China.

Among the leaders who sent messages to Chinese President Hu Jintao to express their condolences are:

Lesotho's King Letsie III;

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa;

Slovenian President Danilo Turk;

President of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge.

Prime Minister of Tonga Feleti Vaka'uta Sevele and Executive Director of the UN World Food Program Josette Sheeran sent messages to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to express their condolences.

Ecuadorian Vice President Lenin Moreno sent a message of condolence to Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping.

Among the leaders who sent messages to Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi are:

Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah;

Equatorial Guinean Foreign Minister Pastor Micha Ondo Bile;

The UN Secretary General's Special Advisor on Sport for Development and Peace Wilfried Lemke.

Chairman of Pakistan's Senate Mohammedmian Soomro offered condolences to China. The Australian Senate adopted a resolution to express condolences to the victims of the earthquake.

The government of Lesotho has decided to provide 5 million maloti (649,000 U.S. dollars) in aid to China.

The Mali government has pledged to provide 25 million CFA Francs (60,500 U.S. dollars) in aid to China.

The Mexican government has pledged to provide 100,000 U.S. dollars in aid to China.

The Kyrgyz government has provided to China an additional 17 tons of relief materials, with a total of 137 tons donated.

The Romanian government has pledged to provide 2 million leu (860,000 U.S. dollars) in emergency humanitarian aid to China.

The government of the Netherlands has pledged to provide an additional 500,000 euros (786,000 U.S. dollars) in aid which will be used to purchase tents by the Red Cross of the Netherlands for the quake affected area. The total aid has mounted to 1 million euros (1.57 million U.S. dollars).

The Cyprus government has pledged to provide 100,000 euros (157,000 U.S. dollars) in aid to China.

The Spanish government has pledged to send 82 tents as emergency aid to the quake-affected area.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has sent the first batch of 10,000 tents to China.
