The Diplomatic Envoys of Arab Countries to China Visit Sichuan

From October 7, 2008 to 13, China's office of the secretariat for "China-Arab Cooperation Forum," the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led a diplomatic delegation to Sichuan. The delegation consists of the ambassadors (or representatives) of 18 Arab countries and the Arab League, their wives, and leaders of major Arabic media agencies stationed in China including Al Jazeera and Maghreb Arab Press. Assistant Foreign Minister Zhai Jun, Ambassador Yao Kuangyi for "China-Arab Cooperation Forum" affairs, and leaders of related departments accompanied the delegation. It is the first diplomatic delegation to visit Sichuan after the Wenchuan earthquake. Sichuan provincial government and Chengdu municipal government attached great importance to their visit and gave them a warm and hospitable reception. Wei Hong, Standing Vice Governor of Sichuan Provincial Government, and Ge Honglin, Mayor of Chengdu met respectively with and hosted banquet for the delegation. They extended sincere gratitude to the Arab countries for their condolences, support and generous assistance to the earthquake-stricken people. Wei Hong issued the Medal for Earthquake Relief to diplomats on behalf of the provincial government of Sichuan. The diplomats visited Dujiangyan, a city hit by the earthquake, visited the settlement points for the victims, and planted trees in Sino-Arab Friendship Forest with children in the disaster areas. They spoke highly of the fast and efficient relief and reconstruction operations of the Chinese government as well as the local government’s vision to pay attention to both earthquake relief and economic and social development. They said that under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government, the people will overcome the disaster and embrace a brighter tomorrow and that the Arab countries will continue to contribute to the reconstruction in the disaster areas. In addition, Arab diplomats also held a forum with leaders of Sichuan and Chengdu in charge of economic affairs and more than 100 business representatives. They visited Chengdu High Tech Park, Sanshengxiang rural and urban integration demonstration projects and the scenic spots in Sichuan. During the meeting and visit, the envoys had direct experience of the solid economic foundation and powerful driving force for the development of Chengdu and Sichuan. They expressed their willingness to promote the advantages of local industries and enterprises, and take practical actions to promote the economic exchanges between Arab states and Sichuan and Chengdu. Related departments in Chengdu also conducted effective communications with the envoys on recent key cooperation areas and reached a preliminary consensus.
