Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Meets with CARICOM Secretary General Carrington
On November 10, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in the Foreign Ministry with a visiting delegation headed by Secretary General of Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) Edwin Carrington.
Yang made positive comments on the new progress made in China-Caribbean friendly cooperation and appreciated CARICOM’s important role in the building of regional integration and regional economic and social development. Yang said the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing ties with Caribbean countries and CARICOM and is ready to strengthen relations with them to continuously expand mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas for a win-win situation and push China-Caribbean ties to a new level.
Carrington said a large majority of Caribbean countries abide by the one-China policy and hold that developing friendly ties with China is in the interest of both sides. He thanked for China’s long-standing disinterested assistance and spoke highly of the policy paper on Latin America and the Caribbean recently issued by the Chinese government. He expressed hope that in the future both sides will continue strengthening bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all areas and further deepen Caribbean-China friendly ties.
Both sides also exchanged views on the international financial situation and other issues of common concern.
