On January 6, 2009, China's Special Envoy to Middle East Sun Bigan requested to meet with Israeli Ambassador to China Amos Nadai on the current situation in the Gaza Strip.

Sun said China is deeply concerned over the escalating Gaza situation as well as its influence on the peace and stability in the Middle East region. China has always upheld the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict by political means and opposed the use of force and any actions that bring harm to innocent civilians. Sun voiced a strong call for the involved parties in the ongoing conflict to exercise restraint, realize a ceasefire immediately and ease the situation as soon as possible. China is ready to continue its active efforts to realize a comprehensive ceasefire at the earliest date possible and bring the Palestinian-Israeli issue back to the track of political settlement.

Amos Nadai appreciated China’s positive role in the Middle East peace process, saying that Israel attaches great importance to China’s relevant positions on the current Gaza situation.
