On January 28, 2009, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Pascal Lamy and Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Margaret Chan respectively in Davos, Switzerland. On January 28, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy in Davos, Switzerland. When meeting with Lamy, Wen said that facing the international financial crisis it is critical to fighting and curbing trade protectionism. Trade protectionism, which seems to protect one country's economy, only slows down the world economic recovery and is good to nobody. One cannot talk one way and do the other in response to trade protectionism. Wen stressed that China always supports the healthy and stable development of multilateral trade mechanism and calls for a fair, free and convenient trade environment. China sticks to the mutually beneficial and win-win opening strategy, honors its commitment to the WTO strictly and does not deliberately pursue trade surplus. China is committed to opening its market and hopes other countries open their markets wider to China as well. It supports the WTO's efforts of pushing for early success of Doha round of talks which China hopes can achieve comprehensive and balanced outcome at an early date with the joint efforts of all parties concerned. It is beneficial to China and the world at large. Lamy said that fighting against trade protectionism is the key to tackling the international financial crisis. No country shall break its promise in that regard. The WTO will make continuous efforts to push the Doha round of talks back to the sound track and for early outcome. The WTO admires China's position of pursuing open trade and opposing trade protectionism, expects to strengthen cooperation with China and hopes China could continue to play a constructive role at the upcoming G20 summit.
On January 28, 2009, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with WHO Director-General Margaret Chan in Davos, Switzerland. At the meeting with Chan, Wen pointed out that the international financial crisis poses new and complicated challenges to the public health security. The WHO shoulders even heavier responsibilities. The Chinese government would continue to make full efforts to support the work of the WHO and Director-General. He noted that the Chinese government follows the principle of running the state for the people. Our policy measures of tackling the international financial crisis aim at both promoting economic growth and improving people's livelihood. We will push forward China's medical and health reform and try to ensure people's universal access to basic medical services. Efforts will also be made to strengthen food safety. China is ready to reinforce cooperation with the WHO in those areas. The WHO appreciates that the Chinese government takes the improvement of people's livelihood and advancing medical reform as the major measures of coping with financial crisis, said Chan. It reflects the Chinese government's pursuit of running state for the people and sets a good example for other countries. The WHO expects to continue to enhance exchanges and cooperation with China.
