On February 9, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao sent a message of condolences to his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd over the raging wildfires that have caused a high death toll and huge damage in Australia in recent weeks. Wen expressed his belief that the Australian government and people would manage to tide over the difficulties and make life in the disaster zone return to normal.
