Yang Jiechi Holds Talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

On July 24, 2009, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

Yang said China has always supported multilateralism and advocates the core role of the United Nations in international affairs. China supports the UN to play a greater role in coping with the global financial crisis, to push for increased input in development issue and to help developing nations to get out of the crisis as soon as possible. China hopes that the UN will play a positive and constructive role in pushing for enhanced international cooperation to cope with climate change based on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Yang elaborated on China's position on the UN reform, pledging that China will participate in the UN reform in an active and constructive manner and push the reform to move in a direction of safeguarding the long-term and common interests of the member countries.

Ban expressed warm congratulations on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. He said China has played a positive and constructive role in international and regional affairs and has made important contributions to resolving global issues. The UN attaches great importance to developing cooperation with China and is ready to further strengthen partnership with the country in a bid to jointly cope with such major global challenges as climate changes and food security, maintain regional peace and stability and promote the world's common development.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues.
