On August 12, 2009, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in Geneva with Sergei Ordzhonikidze, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva and Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament, António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO respectively. Both sides exchanged in-depth opinions on strengthening China's friendly cooperation with relevant international organizations in order to cope with the global challenges jointly and promote world peace and development.

Yang said that the international situation of arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation is undergoing major changes. After 11 years of stagnation, the Conference on Disarmament finally worked out the work plan in May this year, with which the Chinese side feels gratified. China always supports the multilateral process of arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, including the Conference on Disarmament, and is ready to work with all relevant parties to continue to play a constructive role of maintaining world peace and security.

He noted that the international refugee situation remains severe and is even deteriorated by the international financial crisis. The Chinese side has attached great importance to the international refugee protection over the years and is committed to eradicating the root causes of the refugee problem through building lasting peace and achieving common development. The UNHCR plays an important role of alleviating the humanitarian crisis and addressing the issue of refugees. China is willing to step up cooperation with the UNHCR to seek appropriate solutions to the refugee issue.

He indicated that joint efforts of the international community are necessary to the settlement of global public health issue. China is committed to protecting the health of the Chinese people and advancing the global public health undertaking. China thinks highly of the WHO's progress in maintaining the international public health security and sound cooperation with China. It is willing to reinforce cooperation with the WHO and supports its efforts of promoting the cause of global public health.

Ordzhonikidze, Guterres and Margaret Chan rendered high recognition of China's close cooperation and role in solving the existing global issues, made positive comments on China's actions of strengthening cooperation with related international organizations to handle challenges together and expressed expectation to further enhance partnership with China under new circumstances so as to push forward world peace and development.
