Hu Jintao Meets with Nepalese Prime Minister

2009/12/30

On the afternoon of December 30, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Nepalese Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu made positive comments on bilateral ties. He said China and Nepal have decided to lift their bilateral relationship to a higher level by establishing a comprehensive partnership of cooperation, which marks that China-Nepal ties have entered a new phase. "We will work with Nepal to make concerted efforts for the in-depth development of our comprehensive partnership of cooperation," Hu said. President Hu told Nepal that the two nations should consolidate their political basis for the bilateral ties, increase high-level visits, enhance exchanges at all levels, bring into full play the role of various consultation and coordination mechanisms, and continue supporting each other in major issues of mutual concern. Both sides should also cement the economic foundation of bilateral ties. Hu proposed the two countries tap potential of cooperation in the areas of economy, infrastructure construction, agriculture, human resources, tourism and border trade, and actively push for tangible progress in cooperation on the above-mentioned areas. Both sides should reinforce the social basis of bilateral ties and keep closer friendly exchanges between the two peoples so as to carry forward the traditional friendship from generation to generation. He also hoped the two sides would safeguard common interests of both countries, further enhance coordination in international and regional affairs and jointly cope with global issues such as climate change, energy and food security. "We should work together to safeguard regional and world peace and development," Hu said.

Nepal congratulated China on its enormous achievements in economic and social progress. Despite the impact of the global financial crisis, China’s economy has been growing rapidly, which Nepal, as a close friend and neighbor of China, is glad to see. The friendly exchanges between both countries and their peoples enjoy a long history and the Nepalese people hold profound feelings towards the Chinese people. Calling the two countries friends in need, Nepal said currently the friendly cooperation between both countries enjoys a firm foundation with both sides maintaining mutual trust and their bilateral relations developing very well. Under the new situation, Nepal is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in the areas of economy, trade, tourism, agriculture, infrastructure and human resources, and maintain coordination on climate change and other international and global issues, so as to push bilateral comprehensive cooperative partnership to a new level.

Nepal reiterated that his country would unswervingly adhere to the one-China policy. The Nepalese side firmly supports China's effort to uphold state sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity, the prime minister said, adding that Nepal would not allow any force to use Nepal's territory to engage in any anti-China activities.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and other officials attended the meeting.
