Hu Jintao Meets with His Ukrainian Counterpart Yanukovych

2010/04/13

On April 12, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych in Washington. Both sides reached broad consensus on developing and deepening China-Ukraine comprehensive friendly cooperative relations.

Hu said that China and Ukraine are good friends and good partners and the traditional friendship between both peoples enjoys a long history. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 18 years ago, China-Ukraine relations have been developing smoothly with increasing political trust and fruitful cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, science, technology and aerospace. Both sides have shown mutual understanding and support in international affairs and the development of bilateral ties has brought tangible benefits to the two countries and their peoples.

Hu pointed out that China attaches great importance to developing ties with Ukraine. Adhering to the long-term friendship and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation is a set policy of China to develop ties with Ukraine. Hu raised a four-point proposal on the development of bilateral ties. First, carry out more high-level exchanges and build political mutual trust. He urged both sides to maintain frequent contacts between their leaders, legislative bodies and governments and have timely exchange of views on bilateral ties and international and regional issues of common concern, so as to build mutual understanding and establish a solid basis of political trust. Second, boost pragmatic cooperation and achieve mutual benefits. Both sides should give full play to the role of the existing channels and mechanisms of cooperation, explore ways to expand and deepen trade cooperation and continue to do well in cooperation on infrastructure construction, communications, automobile manufacturing and other key projects. Both sides should optimize trade mix, expand and deepen cooperation at local levels and complement each other's advantages for the benefit of both peoples. Third, further multilateral cooperation and strengthen coordination. Hu suggested both sides cooperate with each other in the reform of the UN Security Council, and in coping with global financial crisis and climate change to safeguard common interests of both countries. Fourth, promote technological cooperation and people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Both sides should implement the agreements already agreed upon and discuss new direction and content of cooperation. Both sides should carry out cultural exchange activities in various forms, encourage expanded exchange and cooperation between education institutions of the two countries and enhance people-to-people friendly exchanges so as to build up mutual understanding and friendship between their peoples.

Yanukovych said Ukraine-China relationship now has entered a brand new era for development. Ukraine stands ready to work with China to promote political dialogue and high-level contacts, further cooperation in such areas as economy and trade, high-tech, aviation, aerospace and infrastructure construction, and support cooperation between businesses of both countries, so as to consolidate the traditional friendship between the two peoples and further boost bilateral ties, Yanukovych said. Ukraine will continue to stick to the one-China policy, he said, expressing belief that bilateral relations will surely make greater achievements.

Ling Jihua, Wan Huning, Dai Bingguo and other officials attended the meeting.
