On February 17th, 2004, Vice Minister Dai Bingguo met in the Grand Hotel with Valer Dorneanu, visiting President of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania at the invitation of Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).
Vice Minister Dai said bilateral relations have been developing very smoothly and exchanges of visits by senior officials of the two countries have been frequent during the past five decades. The two sides have also cooperated closely in international affairs. In particular, Prime Minister Dr. Adrian Nastase took a special tour to China to give us precious support when SARS broke out in China last year. Practice shows that the Chinese and Romanian peoples are good friends and share a strong desire for further development of the friendly bilateral relations. The Chinese government gives high priority to relations with Romania and hopes to further promote the traditional relationship of friendly cooperation in an all-round manner together with Romania.
Mr. Dorneanu said China-Romania relations enjoy a long history. Over the years, the two countries have always shown understanding and provided help and support for each other. Bilateral relations are developing smoothly and cooperation in various fields is fruitful. When China is hit by the SARS epidemic, Prime Minister Nastase said to the public that SARS is terrible but friendship is precious. China needs more support than ever in this difficult period of time. As a friend, Romania should give a hand to China. The Romanian side also hopes to further consolidate Romania-China friendship by enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation in economy and trade and expanding coordination between the two countries in international affairs and to make unremitting efforts to safeguard the fundamental interests of the two countries and promote common development.
Mr. Dorneanu highly commended China's flexible and pragmatic foreign policies, saying that the guideline of "one country, two systems" put forward by the Chinese government has successfully resolved the Hong Kong and Macao questions and China will surely be able to solve the Taiwan issue and realize reunification on the precondition of safeguarding the integrity of sovereignty. He said that Romania would continue to adhere to the "one-China" policy. Vice Minister Dai expressed his appreciation to Romania for consistently pursuing the "one China" policy and for supporting China's reunification cause. He believed Romania would continue, as always, to support China's stance on the Taiwan issue and oppose any attempt by the Taiwan authorities to split China and change the current status of Taiwan.
The two sides also introduced to each other their internal and external policies and exchanged views on international issues of common interest.
