On September 22, 2010 local time, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with 21 dignitaries from the US business, financial and academic circles in New York. He listened to their views and suggestions on developing China-US relations and strengthening the bilateral economic and trade cooperation and elaborated China's position and proposition in a friendly, sincere and practical atmosphere.

Wen pointed out that political cooperation benefits both countries while confrontation can only hurt and economically the two countries has reached the point where neither can do without the other. China and the US enjoy far more common interest than differences. Some of the differences faced by the bilateral relations at present are problems emerging in the process of development and should be solved through dialogue and cooperation. China and the US should be partners instead of rivals. A strong and stable China is beneficial to the US and the world at large and China also hopes the US remains strong and stable.

He stressed that the major cause of the US trade deficit with China is not the RMB exchange rate but the bilateral trade and investment structure. China and the US should actively explore massive financial, trade and investment cooperation on the basis of equality, mutual trust and mutual benefit. The Chinese government takes the expansion of domestic demand, protection of intellectual property right and promotion of sustainable development as its national strategy. Foreign enterprises which are registered in China legally enjoy national treatment and are welcomed to more actively participate in China's development.

The US side noted that the bilateral relations, with an extraordinary course, have made remarkable achievements. The US business, financial and academic circles firmly support the development of US-China relations and expect to see China's success. The progress of US-China economic and trade relations benefits both. They hope that the US and China conduct dialogue more extensively and properly handle the problems and differences between the two countries. The US business community is willing to increase investment in China and develop a long-term, positive and constructive partnership with China.

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former US Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, former Chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia and professor of Yale University Stephen Roach, president and CEO of the Center for Strategic and International Studies John Hamre, Chairman and CEO of American Express Kenneth Irvine Chenault, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo Indra Nooyi and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, among others, attended the meeting and made remarks.
