Vice President Xi Jinping Meets with Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan

2012/04/10

On April 10, 2012, Vice President Xi Jinping met with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi said he was glad to meet Prime Minister Erdogan again only over a month after their last meeting and expressed thanks for the warm hospitality and thoughtful arrangements extended by the Turkish side during his visit to Turkey. Xi told Erdogan that China has viewed and developed ties with Turkey from a strategic height, and believes the China-Turkey mutually beneficial cooperation has huge potential and is of strategic significance and global influence. Xi hailed the sustained and rapid growth of relations between the two countries in recent years, citing strengthened political trust, improved cooperation in trade, investment and other areas, frequent cultural and people-to-people exchanges and close consultations on international and regional affairs. China is satisfied with the progress made in bilateral ties.

"To respect and support each other on issues regarding core concerns is not only a manifestation of political trust between China and Turkey, but also the foundation for healthy growth of our strategic cooperative ties," said the vice president. Erdogan had made it clear that his country would never allow any anti-China secessionist activity by anyone in Turkey that may undermine China's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Xi said he appreciates Erdogan's commitment, adding the Chinese government attaches great importance to the development of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and improvement of people's livelihoods there. "China has motivated the whole nation to promote Xinjiang's rapid development, and meanwhile, has taken measures to safeguard the region's stability and peace," Xi added. Xinjiang is now at its golden age featured by the rapid economic and social development, remarkable improvement of people's livelihood and peaceful coexistence of people of all nationalities. Xi said he hopes that after returning home, Erdogan would encourage more Turkish businessmen to invest in Xinjiang to help with its development.

Describing Xi's Turkey visit in February as "fruitful" and a "full success," Erdogan said the close contact between both countries' leaders is of great importance to future growth of Turkey-China ties. Erdogan is the first Turkish prime minister to visit China in 27 years. Turkey-China cooperation has huge potential and Turkey is ready to cement cooperation with China in such areas as trade, investment, aviation, high-speed rail, tourism and project contracting so as to push forward Turkey-China strategic cooperative relations, he said. Erdogan also reaffirmed Turkey's adherence to the one-China policy.

They also exchanged views on the situation in West Asia and North Africa and other issues of common concern.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Chinese Ambassador to Turkey Gong Xiaosheng accompanied Xi during the meeting.
