Consul General Ma Zhanwu Attends Inauguration of Svikriti Exhibition

Mr. Ma Zhanwu, Consul General of People's Republic of China in Kolkata, attended the inauguration of Svikriti, the exhibition of the awardees of the annual exhibition 2017 of Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Kolkata on 29 July 2017.

Mrs. Ayrshire Mohta, Chairperson of Birla Academy of Art and Culture and Honorary Consul of Belgium, Mrs. Nayantara Palchoudhuri, Honorary Consul of Norway, the participating artists and about 50 other invited guests were present at the event.

Mrs. Mohta said Svikriti was special because this year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Academy. About 402 artists participated in the annual competition, from which nine were selected and their works were displayed at the exhibition. Mrs. Mohta also mentioned that the Chinese Consulate had recently organized a photography exhibition at the Birla Academy, and this Academy stands ready to work with the Chinese Consulate to promote exchanges between Chinese and Indian artists.

Mr. Ma indicated that he was pleased and honored to be part of the exhibition and congratulated the efforts made by the Academy in organizing the exhibition, and he was impressed by the art works and commended the creativity and imagination of the artists. He also recognized the contribution by the Birla family in promoting the artistic undertakings in this part of the country. He shared his belief that art awakens the soul and draws attention to the beauty of life, thereby helping make the world a better place to live in.

Mr. Ma said that both China and India are great nations blessed with brilliant civilizations and many outstanding artists, and they have had artistic exchanges since ancient times, which should be continued for the benefit of both peoples. His consulate would continue to work with all friends from India to promote such exchanges.

Mr. Ma also lit up the mangal deep (the auspicious lamp) along with Mrs. Mohta and the artists to inaugurate the exhibition and then watched the exhibits carefully with the others.
