Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of Foreign Ministry Xu Hong and Legal Advisor of the US State Department Hold Annual Consultation

On October 14, 2015, Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Foreign Ministry Xu Hong and Acting Legal Advisor Mary McLeod of the US State Department held in Beijing the second annual consultation between Director-Generals (Legal Advisors) of the Treaty and Law Departments of the two Foreign Ministries. Personnel from the Department of Treaty and Law, the Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs, and the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry as well as the Office of the Legal Advisor and the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the US Department of State and the US Embassy in China were present.

The consultation this year was a part in implementing the results achieved in the 7th China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue. Both sides introduced their respective stances and practices and exchanged in-depth views on issues of common concern such as working mechanism of diplomatic law, legal affairs of the United Nations, law on the maritime affairs, international internet law, cooperation on the repatriation of corrupt officials and recovery and return of illegal assets, sovereign immunity, and situation on contracting and implementation of contracts. Both sides held that they should maintain communication on important international law issues through the consultation mechanism and continue to expand consensus and properly handle divergences so as to make contribution to China-US relations in diplomatic law level.

Both sides agreed to hold the next round of consultation at each other's convenience in the US next year.
