2017/07/20

On July 20, 2017, the 7th China-Russia consultation on Northeast Asia security was held in Beijing. Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou and Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov of Russia co-chaired the consultation. Officials from the Foreign Ministries, Defence Ministries and other departments of both countries were present.

China and Russia reiterated to stick to the goal of the denuclearization of the Peninsula, insist on safeguarding the peace and stability of the Peninsula, and adhere to the settlement of the issue through dialogue and coordination. The two countries will continuously make efforts to this end. Both sides voiced concerns about the missile launching activities of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and urged relevant parties to exercise restraint and avoid taking actions that may add tension to the situation. The two sides called for all parties to support the joint initiative proposed by China and Russia based on China’s “suspension-for-suspension” proposal and “dual track” approach and Russia’s step-by-step conception, so as to open up realistic ways for the settlement of the Peninsula issue.

China and Russia restated the opposition to the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile defense system in the Republic of Korea by the US, and agreed to continuously take necessary measures to safeguard security interests and regional strategic balance of the two countries.
