2017/10/12

From October 10 to 11, 2017, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)-Afghanistan Contact Group meeting at Vice Foreign Ministerial Level was held in Moscow. Assistant Foreign Minister Li Huilai led a delegation to attend the meeting. Deputy Foreign Ministers of other SCO member states and Afghanistan, as well as the principals of SCO Secretariat and Executive Committee of the SCO Regional Counter-Terrorism Structure attended the meeting.

This meeting is an important step to implement the consensus on continuing work of the Contact Group reached by the leaders of the SCO member states at the SCO Astana Summit this June. All parties exchanged views centering on the situation in Afghanistan and its neighboring regions, the solutions to the Afghan issue, the top priority of SCO-Afghanistan cooperation and other issues, and agreed unanimously that the Contact Group is helpful for all parties to strengthen communication, promote understanding, build consensus and better coordinate and cooperate with each other. The Contact Group will play a constructive role in national reconciliation and peaceful reconstruction of Afghanistan and in regional security and stability. All parties support China to host the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group meeting at Vice Foreign Ministerial Level early next year as the SCO rotating presidency.

During the meeting, Li Huilai also held bilateral meetings with Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov of Russia, Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai of Afghanistan, Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua of Pakistan and Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs Ruchi Ghanashyam of India respectively.
