Special Representative of the Chinese Government on African Affairs Xu Jinghu Attends IORA 17th Meeting of the Council of Ministers

On October 18, 2017, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on African Affairs Xu Jinghu, on behalf of China, attended the 17th Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) held in Durban, South Africa. Special Representative Xu Jinghu expressed in her speech at the meeting that as a dialogue partner, China attaches high importance to its cooperation with the IORA, and stands ready to further deepen cooperation with the IORA and its member states in trade, investment, marine economy, human resources development, tourism, traditional medicine and other aspects, and constantly expand new cooperation areas. China welcomes the IORA and its member states to actively participate in or align the “Belt and Road” construction, so as to share the outcomes of mutually beneficial cooperation.

During the meeting, Special Representative Xu Jinghu met with IORA Secretary-General K. V. Bhagirath. Highly appraising China’s positive contributions to the development of the IORA, all the attending parties welcome China to continuously play a greater role in IORA cooperation and the development of Indian Ocean area.

The meeting was co-sponsored by the South African government and the IORA Secretariat. All parties conducted extensive exchanges on such topics as promoting blue economy, women’s economic empowerment and maritime security, strengthening the IORA’s capacity building and mechanism building, and expanding dialogue partners’ participation in IORA affairs. The meeting adopted Durban Communiqué. Foreign Ministers or high-level representatives of the 21 IORA member states and 7 dialogue partners were present at the meeting.
