Hu Jintao Meets with Uzbek President Islam Abduganiyevich Karimov

On the afternoon of July 5, 2005, President Hu Jintao met with Uzbek President Islam Abduganiyevich Karimov who was there to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

Hu said to Karimov that his visit to China a month ago was a great success and they signed the Treaty on China-Uzbekistan Friendly and Cooperative Partnership. The relevant departments of both sides should go all out to implement the consensus and agreements that have been reached and score more achievements as soon as possible, in an effort to secure the sustained and sound development of bilateral friendly and cooperative relations. Karimov said his Chinese tour a month ago rounded up with remarkable achievements, laying down a solid foundation for the comprehensive development of the Uzbekistan-China ties. The Uzbek side is ready to collaborate with the Chinese side to fully implement the agreements that have been inked, so as to make the friendly relations of cooperation between the two nations even closer.

The two heads of state also exchanged views on the situation of Central Asia. Hu stressed China has always respected and supported the development path Uzbekistan and other Central Asian nations have chosen, and supported their efforts in safeguarding their national security and regional peace and stability. Karimov spoke highly of China's policy toward Central Asia, indicating that Uzbekistan would like to strengthen cooperation with China both bilaterally and within the framework of the SCO in a bid to maintain regional stability and promote common development.

The two sides also exchanged views on other issues of common interest.
