China and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

Introduction of UNDP

UNDP administers and coordinates most of the technical assistance provided through the UN system. It was established in 1965. Its mission is to help countries in their efforts to achieve sustainable human development by enhancing their capacity to design and carry out development programmes in poverty eradication, employment creation and sustainable livelihoods, the empowerment of women and the protection and regeneration of environment. Poverty eradication has always been its top priority. Special attention is paid to the needs of the least developed countries (LDCs).

China's relations with UNDP

China has participated in the activities of UNDP since 1972. Between 1975 and 1977 and from 1979 till now, China has been elected member of the Executive Board of UNDP. China's country cooperation

programmes with UNDP started in 1978. Till Sept. 1999, China has

accepted USD550 million from UNDP in the form of 660 cooperation programmes. In its turn, China has donated USD45.48 million and RMB22.48 million (Chinese Yuan) to UNDP

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (Tel: 62043563) is responsible for matters related to UNDP. UNDP set its office in Beijing in Sept. 1979.
