Introduction of UNICEF

UNICEF was founded in 1946 for the purpose of providing emergency assistance to children suffering from the Second World War. Since 1950, the Fund has involved itself in solving children's problems in the developing countries such as malnutrition, illness and education, and its business scope has expanded to children's survival, development and protection, with the protection of girls as its top priority.

China's Relations with UNICEF

China began its cooperation with the Fund in 1979 and has been the member of its Executive Board since 1980. Mr. Carol Bellamy (from the United States), Executive Director of the Fund, visited China many times. The Fund provided USD285.66 million of assistance to China between 1990 and 1998 and carried out 150 projects. Since 1979, China has contributed USD 11.8 million and RMB 2.1 million to the Fund. In 1998, China's donation amounted to USD1.1 million and RMB 300,000. In March 1991, former Premier Li Peng, on behalf of the Chinese government, signed the World Declaration on the Survival, Protection and Development of the Children and the Plan of Action which were adopted by the World Summit for Children. The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation(Tel:65197709) and the All-China Women's Federation(Tel: 65266502) are responsible for matters relating to the Fund. The Fund set up its office in Beijing in 1981. The present(7th) representative to China is Mr. Kethama Mathema (from Nepal).
