China and UN Economic and Social Council(ECOSOC)

Introduction of ECOSOC

As one of the principal UN organs, ECOSOC, under the authority of the UN General Assembly, is responsible for coordinating the work of the United Nations and its specialized agencies in the economic and social fields. The Council consists of 54 members elected for a 3-year term, and 18 members are reelected each year. The Council holds an organizational session and a substantive session annually. The Council has 6 standing commissions (Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, Committee on Negotiations with Intergovernmental Agencies, Committee for Programme and Coordination, Committee on Energy and National Resources, Commission on Human Settlements, Commission on Multinational Companies), 9 functional commissions(Statistical Commission, Commission on Population and Development, Commission for Social Development, Commission on Human Rights, Commission on the Status of Women, Commission on Narcotic Drugs, Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, Commission on Sustainable Development, Commission on Science and Technology for Development) and 5 regional commissions (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for West Asia, Economic Commission for Europe, Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean).

China' s Relations with ECOSOC

China became the member of the Council in 1971 and has been reelected continuously until now. China participates actively in the Council's meetings and activities, and plays an important role in its subsidiary bodies. The Chinese delegation takes part in and speaks at the Council's substantive session every year.
