Spokesperson on UN's acceptance of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as its member state

2000-11-15 00:00
Q: What's your comment on UN's acceptance of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as its member state?

A: China is pleased to see that the UN General Assembly agreed to accept the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) as its member state and hopes this would provide an opportunity for the FRY to fully return back to the international community at an early date. It is not only conducive to the stability and development of the FRY, but also to the peace and development in the Balkan region and Europe as a whole. Since disintegration of the former FRY, China, as a member of the UN Security Council, has all along held the view that all countries of the former FRY should have seats in the United Nations, participating in international affairs as an equal member of the international community, and no country should be singled out and the issue of UN seats by countries of the former FRY should be actively pursued and properly handled. We think it is not only be beneficial to the normalization process of the relations among the Former FRY, but also to the maintenance of peace and stability of the region. We have been making unremitting efforts to that end. We sincerely hope that all problems left over from the former FRY would be settled through consultation at an early date.
