2000-11-23 17:26
Q: On November 20, the 55th Session of the UN General Assembly adopted by an overwhelming majority the resolution on the preservation of and compliance with the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM Treaty) jointly sponsored by China, Russia and other countries. What is your comment?

A: On November 20, the 55th Session of the UN General Assembly adopted by an overwhelming majority-88 votes in favour and 5 against-the resolution on the preservation of and compliance with the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM Treaty) jointly sponsored by China, Russia, Belarus and Kirgizstan. Compared with last year, this year has seen more countries supporting this resolution, which fully demonstrates the will and resolve of the international community to safeguard global strategic balance and stability and its disapproval of the development and deployment of "national defense missile system" by a certain country. As a co-sponsor, China wishes to express its sincere thanks to the countries that supported this resolution.

We hope that the country concerned can really listen to the just voices of the international community, strictly observe and preserve the ABM Treaty and give up as early as possible the anti-missile plans that disrupt the global strategic balance.
