Spokesperson on the Sixth Session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties

2000-11-29 13:17
Q: The Sixth Session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties held in the Netherlands ended without any agreement. What is the comment of the Chinese side?

A: The United Nations Framework Convention and its Kyoto Protocol are two great achievements of the international community in their struggle against climate change. All countries have placed great hope on the Sixth Session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties, expecting an agreement to be reached on specific arrangement concerning the Convention and the Protocol, especially the Three Mechanisms -- the Clean Development Mechanism, Joint Implementation and Emission Trading.

This conference ended without any substantial because some individual developed countries were not willing to perform their duties, which China deeply regrets.

It is our view that only through unremitting efforts in light of the principles and goals enshrined in the Convention and the Protocol can mankind achieve the expected result on this major task of addressing the issue of climate change.
