Spokesperson on China's position in UN peace-keeping operation

2001-01-11 17:53
Q: What?s the China's position in UN peace-keeping operation?

A: Peace-keeping operation is one of the important means of the UN for carrying out its responsibility of maintaining world peace and security. The leading role of the UN in this regard cannot be replaced. To observe principles and purposes of the UN Charter and norms governing international relations, especially the principles of respect of state sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, prior consent of the parties concerned, neutrality, no use of violence except in case of self-defence, is the fundamental guarantee of the smooth implementation and the success of the UN peace-keeping operations. These principles remain the basic norms that should be strictly observed in the future UN peace-keeping operations.

As the permanent member of the UN Security Council, China attaches great importance to the work of the UN in the peace-keeping fields and has made its own contributions. Since the 1990s, China has sent 500 military observers person/time to the relevant UN peace-keeping operations. It sent an engineering team of 800 persons to Cambodia and 55 civilian policemen to the UN administrative authorities in East Timor. On 4 January this year, the Chinese Government again sent 5 civilian peace-keeping policemen to the UN mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina. China is willing to make continued contributions to the UN peace-keeping operation in the future.
