Joint Press Communiqué of the Meeting between the Vice President of People's Republic of China and the Foreign Ministers' Council of the Andean Community

On January 27, 2005, Vice President Zeng Qinghong of the People's Republic of China and the Foreign Ministers' Council of the Andean Community (Ancom) led by Foreign Minister Manuel Rodriguez Cuadros of the Republic of Peru held a meeting at the Ancom Secretariat to review China-Ancom relations in the political, economic and social spheres and their cooperation prospects.

The continuous dialogue demonstrates the wish of the two sides to strengthen ties and is aimed to expand bilateral trade and promote economic development, so as to achieve sustainable development that will create social harmony and well being.

The two sides indicated explicitly that international relations should be based on multilateralism and full respect for international principles and commitments. They reiterated their wish to develop mutual political cooperation on that idea.

Ancom foreign ministers noted that they hope the People's Republic of China could make great contributions to enhanced relations between the Andean region and the Asia Pacific. They also indicated that they would like help bring closer relations between China and the South American Community of Nations.

Vice President Zeng briefed Ancom foreign ministers on the situation across the Taiwan Straits and the drafting of the Anti-Secession Law by the National People's Congress. Ancom foreign ministers reiterated their adherence to the one-China policy and the Chinese government's just action in reunifying the country with the policy of "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems" and in safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

While stressing the achievements brought about by the political consultation and cooperation mechanism, both sides reiterated that they would give priority to projects committed to the expansion of trade, the promotion of investment, the development of natural resources and technology, environmental protection, sustainable development and the fight against drug trafficking worldwide which would be realized through the bilateral political consultation and cooperation mechanism.
