Assistant Foreign Minister Hua Chunying Attends the Opening Ceremony of the HCCH Asia Pacific Week and the 130th Anniversary of the Hague Conference on Private International Law

On September 11, 2023, Assistant Foreign Minister Hua Chunying attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech at the HCCH Asia Pacific Week and the 130th Anniversary of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Hua Chunying stated that the HCCH is the most influential international organization in the area of private international law, facilitating exchanges on civil and commercial matters across borders. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Promoting connectivity is a shared goal of the BRI and the HCCH. Working together, the BRI and HCCH will boost international legal cooperation on civil and commercial matters and strengthen the international rule of law. In the next step, all countries need to respond to the needs of the times and improve international rules. In making the international conventions, it is particularly important to practice multilateralism. All countries need to urge good faith and reinforce compliance. All countries should uphold the international economic and trade rules and the multilateral trading system. All countries need to enhance exchange and cooperation and promote inclusiveness and mutual learning. All countries need to embrace the Global Civilization Initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping, enhance inter-civilization dialogue on the rule of law, and work for a community with a shared future for mankind.

Secretary General of the HCCH Dr. Christophe Bernasconi, Chief Executive of HKSAR John Lee Ka-chiu, Secretary for Justice of HKSAR Paul Lam, and President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong Professor Zhang Xiang also attended and addressed the opening ceremony.

Themed "Access to Justice and Sustainable Development: The Impact of the HCCH in an Interconnected World", the Conference was organized by the HCCH and hosted by the HCCH Asia Pacific Regional Office, with support from the HKSAR Government. More than 200 representatives from over 30 countries attended the Conference.
